Types of Toy Airplanes for Kids: Best Picks by Age

Types of Toy Airplanes for Kids: Age Guide and UK Prices

There are seven main types of toy airplanes for kids: friction and push-and-go planes, lights-and-sound planes, pull-back planes, wind-up and foam gliders, launcher planes, remote-control (RC) planes and transforming aircraft robots. Gliders and launcher planes are the types designed to fly. The others are for ground and pretend play, and RC models vary, so read each description. Our airport playset, Airbus plane toy and wind-up gliders are all marked 3+.ย

This guide is for parents and gift buyers choosing a plane for a child, and for small shops deciding what to stock. For each type, we explain how it works, whether it really flies, where it is best used and what it costs.

1. Friction and Push-and-Go Planes

A friction plane has a built-in motor: push it forward and it keeps rolling. It doesnโ€™t fly, but it needs no setup and suits pretend airport games.

Our airport vehicle playset includes an airliner, shuttle bus, service vehicles, a fuel tanker and a terminal sign. It has a push-and-go friction motor and LED lights and sounds, and it comes on a retail blister card of about 30 cm ร— 20 cm. It is marked 3+ because of small parts.

2. Lights-and-Sound Planes

These planes use batteries for flashing lights, engine noises or music. They are floor toys, not flyers. The Airbus A380 toy aeroplane has LED lights and music. Our Airbus plane toy has flashing lights on a switch, needs batteries and is marked 3+. Always check which batteries are required.

3. Pull-Back Planes

Pull the plane back, let go, and it rolls forward. They are small and inexpensive, which makes them popular for pocket-money and party-bag use. Our combat pull-back alloy aircraft come in eight colours and are sold in packs of 12 at ยฃ7.80.

4. Wind-Up and Foam Gliders

Gliders are the simplest type that really flies. Our wind-up flying glider planes are large EPP foam planes: wind the rubber band, spin the propeller and throw. They are marked 3+. We also stock an LED glider plane with a built-in light strip. Use open space and throw away from people, animals, roads and buildings.

5. Launcher Planes

Launchers send small foam gliders further than a hand throw, so children can aim, launch and collect them again and again. The Air Fighter slingshot playset has four patterned gliders and a 20 cm slingshot launcher. Our airplane launcher toy gun comes with three mini gliders, and its product page says it can be used indoors and outdoors. Never aim a launcher at a face or an animal, and supervise younger children.

6. Remote-Control (RC) Planes

RC aeroplane does not always mean flies, so read the description. The RC Plane 27MHz Aerobus has a 27MHz remote with four-way control (forward, backward, left and right), lights, engine sounds and a rechargeable battery. Our 2-channel Ground Airbus is a different design: it runs on the ground. Charge with the supplied cable and never leave a toy charging unattended.

For more on matching RC toys to a childโ€™s stage, see our guide to choosing the right remote-control toys by age.

7. Transforming Aircraft Robots

These toys switch between plane and robot. The transforming aircraft robot is a 2-in-1 bump-and-go toy with automatic transformation, lights and electronic sound. Check the age marking on its product page before buying.

How to Choose: 5 Quick Checks

  1. Age marking: follow it first, then think about your childโ€™s interests and confidence.
  2. Play space: push-along and transforming toys suit indoors; gliders, launchers and RC planes need open outdoor space.
  3. Power: check whether the toy needs batteries or a charger, and whether they are included.
  4. Safety information: look for a UKCA or CE mark and EN 71 toy-safety information from the supplier, plus the warnings and instructions in the box.
  5. Durability: read the product description for materials and construction, especially for toys that will be launched or thrown.

Indoor or Outdoor Play?

Keep flying and launching toys away from faces, stairs and fragile objects indoors, and follow the manufacturerโ€™s guidance on where each toy can be used. Outdoors, choose a clear area away from roads and crowds, and check the wind: strong gusts make gliders and RC planes harder to control. For more ideas, read our guide on how to choose outdoor toys for kids and our checklist on how to choose safe toys.

Safety: What to Check

Toys sold in Great Britain must meet the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011 and carry a UKCA or CE mark, as set out in the GOV.UK guidance for toy manufacturers and suppliers. Our product pages state that our airplane playsets meet these requirements. Whatever you buy, check the packaging for the mark, the age warning and the instructions. Our guide on how to choose safe toys has more detail.

Does It Really Fly?

Only gliders and launcher planes are designed to fly. Our flying toy airplane launcher page says its foam planes can reach up to 20 m, but real distance depends on wind and launch angle. Friction, pull-back, lights-and-sound and transforming toys stay on the ground. RC models vary by design.

FAQs about Types of Airplane Toy for Kids

What are the main types of toy airplanes for kids?

There are seven: friction and push-and-go, lights-and-sound, pull-back, wind-up and foam gliders, launcher planes, remote-control planes and transforming aircraft robots.

Do toy airplanes really fly?

Only some do. Gliders and launcher planes are made to fly. Friction, pull-back and lights-and-sound planes stay on the ground, and RC models vary, so read the product description.

What is the difference between friction, pull-back and bump-and-go planes?

A friction plane keeps rolling after a push. A pull-back plane is pulled backwards and released. A bump-and-go plane drives itself and changes direction when it hits an obstacle.

How much do toy airplanes cost in the UK?

Our trade prices range from ยฃ0.65 per pull-back plane (in packs of 12) to ยฃ6.99 for the RC Plane 27MHz Aerobus.

Can shops buy toy airplanes in bulk?

Yes. UK mainland delivery is ยฃ9.99 and free over ยฃ1,000, with dispatch typically within 24 to 48 hours from Manchester.

Find an Airplane Toy That Suits Your Child

The best airplane toy is not necessarily the most complicated or the one with the most features. It is the one that suits the child’s interests, age and play environment. A simple toy plane can inspire imaginative stories, a glider can make outdoor play more active, and a remote-control model can introduce children to basic controls. Transforming aircraft and airport playsets offer other ways to explore the world of planes through pretend play.

Take time to compare the product details, check the age recommendations and think about where the toy will be used. That will help you make a more informed choice.
